Time to swoon from Aegyo!! 

When the MC asked for the member who loves getting his way by acting cute, everyone knew it was time to swoon. This question, which seems specifically tailored for the maknae, had gotten Kris once at KCON in Los Angeles. Many were highly anticipating Kris to burst the aegyo meter this time, especially when the audience were here to celebrate his birthday. Sure enough, the MC's voice calmly sounded amidst the boisterous fan cheers, "You guys can do it as much as you want in private, but none of us will get to see your cute acts that way. Now that we have all of you here today, we are not letting you go unless all of you take turns to show us a cute expression."

MAKNAE: "You want to see it? Since you want to see, then I shall show you. Where's the camera?" (All his ‘Ge-Ge’s turned towards the maknae's headshot on the giant screen. LU HAN: He tried to pass his turn by forcing the microphone into Lay's hands. He failed, of course, and Xiumin grabbed the chance to push him forward. He looked a little lost standing up at the front, and his eyes were looking everywhere except at the camera. If we picture Lay as a 'kitty' while he was doing that, it would not be bad at all, I thought as tears stream down my cheeks.

Next came the highlight of the aegyo time. Before Lay's 'Secret Time' could end; before Kris started doing any actions, the fans were already screaming at the top of their lungs. No doubt, what the fangirls want to see, more than anything else, was 'Wu's Exceptional-to-the-Power-of-Infinity Aegyo Vibe'. The audience were yelling, "Blast your aegyo cannon at us!" and bursting with anticipation! (That did not actually happen.)

KRIS: "Yes, I know! I know! I know there is no way I can escape it! Alright! I know! I know! Would everyone please give me 30 seconds to say something? Is this the camera? Is this the one? Is the camera on me?" (*half-kneeling with the screen showing him waving and pointing at the camera*) "Do I look this way? Alright, it is going to be my birthday soon and I have never had such a meaningful birthday. I have seen and heard about what everyone has done for me. The charity events, birthday wishes, advertisements, and all the things you have done. I have seen each and every one of them. For these, I would like to give all of you a gift in return. Everybody, keep calm for 10 seconds and please keep it a secret for me! This is so embarrassing, but, uhm, can I sing?" When the MC reminded him that he has not done the aegyo, he said, "Aegyo? Yes, of course! Of course! Of course I will do it. What shall I sing? What shall I sing? What shall I sing?" The fangirls were all shouting "Two Moons! Two Moons! Two Moons! Two Moons!" and then started singing 'Happy Birthday' with lots of warmth and love. "Okay! Okay! Okay! I'm ready! I'm sorry! I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry! I'm ready! I’m ready! I’m ready! I’m ready!"

Kris finally decided to sing 'At Least I Still Have You' 《至少还有你》. The moment he started singing, the audience immediately followed. It was the first time anyone heard Kris Wu up close. The atmosphere was full of love with Kris gently crooning, backed with the sweet and clear voices of the fangirls. The Kris who was singing and looking lovingly at the audience is a different Kris from the usual charismatic presence he displays on stage. Having another nickname is never one too many. 'Earnest Wu' not only raps, he also has the potential to sing sentimental songs.

At the end of the song, 'Earnest Wu', who has been beaming his love at the fans, said, "Thank you, my beloved every you [3], thank you for being with me always, thank you."

(T/N 1: 'True man of the Capital': (Chinese: 京城纯爷们; literal meaning: 'Jing city’s pure man') It is one of the many nicknames Chinese fans gave Luhan. The character 'Jing' (京) by itself means 'of/from the capital'. In ancient China, regardless of dynasty and location, capital cities were referred to as 'Jing City'(京城). 'Jing' is also the character used in the name 'Beijing' (北京), which literally means 'Northern Capital'. Beijing is the current capital of China and also where Luhan came from. Chinese fans fondly call Luhan a 'true man of the Capital' because he actually has a manly disposition, despite his cute, innocent, and angelic appearance.)

(T/N 2: 'Is this really better? ': (Chinese: 这样真的更好吗？) The line from the lyrics of 'MAMA', sang by Chen, right before the chorus. It is often used by Chinese fans as a pun to 'question' the behaviour of the guys in EXO, whenever they do something cute or at times 'out of the realm of the solar system'.)

(T/N 3: 'Every you': (Chinese: 每个你; literal meaning: every one of you) Originally from the message by Kris which was posted in EXO-M Official Weibo on their 100th day since debut. In the message, he wrote, "Rather than saying 'I love you all', I prefer to say 'I love you, every one of you'." ("比起说喜欢你们, 我好像还是更喜欢说, 我喜欢你, 每个你。") Since the message was posted, '每个你' ('every you') quickly became a self-given name for Kris-biased Chinese fangirls. In addition to that, Kris has since been using it as a noun when he speaks and had written the English version 'my every you' in one of his renren statuses.)

Gentle Lu

Lu Han is warm and gentle like a piece of lustrous jade. His naturally-sweet temperament not only makes one wants to be close to him, it also arouses one's desire to protect him. Even though he had recently gained nicknames like 'jaw guardian' and 'crazy frog', his physical agility does not push aside the fact that there is a quiet side of him too. It is this gentleness that reins his playfulness before things get out of hand. His sensitivity has allowed him to create a balance between the bubbly youth and the responsible man within himself.

A smooth piece of jade that has no sharp edges is still as hard as jadeite should be. "Ten years together, Red Devils forever" [1] clearly shows Lu Han's undying passion. His humility, that which he would not walk into the focus of the camera unless he is being pushed towards it. The efforts he puts into rounding up and maintaining the close relationship among his 'brothers'. His maturity and composure had carried him through adversities, enabling him to face up to and dispel negative emotions. The mild 'Little Deer' who is always smiling softly, is the same 'Little Deer' who always tries hard to run towards faraway fans from his spot on stage during rehearsals.

If KRIS is like the 'pillar' of the group and TAO the 'pressure indicator', then LU HAN will be their 'tranquilizer'.

'Mēn Sāo' [1] CHEN

CHEN is a chatterbox, this every Earthling knows. My eyes nearly popped from their sockets when I saw a laughing and blabbering CHEN prodding his Ge-ges' toes with his during rehearsal. For a Type B Virgo, who never runs out of tricks up his sleeves, it is not at all surprising to see the chatterbox secretly doing his mischief under the cover of chirpy chatter.

Other than his gift of voice, CHEN's not-considerably-big eyes that are accentuated by deeply creased eyelids score him in the looks department as well. A youth is all but a youth. Here he is, ripping screams from fangirls with a raise of hand and a soaring high note; there he was, messing with everyone's feels by pursing his lips and pouting cutely at a rubber ducky. He is young and brimming with his vocal talent. He melts hearts and sends fangirls reeling with his aegyo. The night in Zhenjiang, the corny fingers-on-cheeks aegyo, was merely a drop in the bucket in his league of off-camera aegyos.

On the one hand, CHEN the derp is standing with his hands on his hips, rattling cheeky remarks at his Ge-ges or pointing at his Di-di, giving away his secrets, but on the other hand, he is the scholar in a plaid shirt banishing the talkative derp into nothingness with his perfect side profile and gorgeous eyelashes. This 'mēn sāo' [1] young man, CHEN, is deep and perplexing. However, this is the very essence that makes the 'mēn sāo' [1] personality appealing. What is available in plain sight is not considered hidden, isn't it so?

I chose to keep this word in Chinese because I am unable to find an English counterpart that will do this unique adjective justice. ^_^;)

Steadfast XIU

Balance is essential in a group; the balance of strengths; the balance of paces; tartness must be counterbalanced by graciousness; cheesiness must be matched by modesty. A successful group should possess the ability to advance or retreat at will.

During the first studio photo shoot  Xiumin-goon mildly responded with a smile when I carelessly addressed him as 'Minseok'. That was the first time I had gotten a glimpse of the stability that calms all chaos. He has an extremely important role to play on stage. However, it takes careful observation to notice him, as he is often not the one who will catch your eye at first glance.

He is not the charismatic, the derp, nor the beautiful; he is the one who makes all worries vanish into thin air, just with his presence on stage. He makes no mistakes; he is very smart; he takes your breath away with his charms; he bristles when he is mad; he is always in place no matter when the cameras focus on him. Even when there are no cameras during rehearsals, Xiumin's dance moves are still precise from his joints right to his fingertips. The Xiumin-goon at this moment is truly impressive.

It suddenly dawns on me that, for balance, he had always taken the 'fall back' role, but in time to come, the talents that he is now keeping for the sake of not tipping the scale, will shine doubly its brilliance. That's according to the Rule of Balance; moreover, he is one who shines so brightly.
